Hunger, It's not a Game - 05/15/2014 Membership Meeting

I don't know about the rest of you, but I was shocked to find out that the Greensboro/High Point area is ranked as the second hungriest place in the U.S.A. How incredibly sad that we have so many people in this prosperous nation, including young children, that don't have enough to eat.

Don Milholin, who founded the Out of the Garden Project along with his wife Kristy, gave us some background on his own story along with some history and information about their wonderful outreach program that helps bring meals to needy families throughout the Piedmont Triad area.. They currently provide over 900 "Backpacks" of food each weekend to nearly 50 elementary, middle and high schools in our area.  Each bag of food contains two individual meals for a family of four, plus snacks for the children. In 2012 alone, "Operation Backpack" distributed more than 100 tons of food!

Out of the Garden is also the only organization in the Piedmont that offers two "Mobile Food Pantries" that operate in rural areas that don't have easy access to grocery stores. They currently serve 1200-1500 additional individuals each month through these mobile pantries.

Out of the Garden is one of the organizations Gate City funded this year through our Gate City Foundation. Steve Brannan was the sponsoring Rotarian.
